In most circumstances it is not possible to remove heavy metals pollution by in situ techniques.

However In-situ techniques may be used to render very toxic compounds considerably less toxic and immobilize heavy metals, so they are not leached to the groundwater. They are not moved from the soil, but are rendered environmentally harmless, as long as the soil is not disturbed

E.g. Chrome(VI), Lead, Arsenic, Copper, Cadmium, Mercury.
